Virtual Xen Backup Software

Microsoft created the Hyper-V virtual machine.  It is used for Xen backup.  However, it was also created out of Microsoft's desire to compete with the VMware Corporation. 

What Hyper-V Is

Hyper-V was designed by Microsoft to provide users with a complete virtualized hardware that can be utilized by a user's current system.  There are a lot of great advantages to it.  These advantages include:

  • Users are given numerous virtual platforms that they can use simultaneously.
  • It not only allows but also encourages shared pools of resources.  This will be of great benefit for companies that have large data collections.
  • It supports the use of live migration without any interruption on the user’s end.
  • It allows one-power virtual machines to be used at the system boot phase so that you can actually turn on your Windows machine with VMware installed, thus automatically starting a virtual machine.

Disadvantages To Using Hyper-V

Of course, there are also some disadvantages to using virtual platforms and environments.  Some of these disadvantages include:

  • New knowledge must be acquired.  Since a virtual environment is different from a server that is outside this type of an environment, the administrator has to update their skill set and learn this new platform.
  • Machine failure is another important factor.  This is especially true if you have a lot of virtual machines on one physical box whenever you encounter hardware failure.  At this time all of the virtual machines on that machine will suffer.

Comparisons Of Hyper-V And VMware

Both Hyper-V and VMware are similar in that they focus upon virtual environments.  Hyper-V was initially created in order to support isolation in terms of partitions (the part of the hard drive that is made available to the operating system).  Of course, the main difference between these 2 programs is their price.  If you want to use Hyper-V on just 5 servers it will cost you around $10,000 whereas VMware can cost you anywhere up to $50,000 for 5 servers.  Another important difference between these 2 systems is the number of specifications.  While VMware doesn’t have an application or service monitoring system, Microsoft Hyper-V does.  Furthermore, VMware has been around for a lot longer than Microsoft Hyper-V.  This means that any potential bugs and problems with VMware have already been worked out, there is still the possibility that these bugs and problems will still arise with Hyper-V.
