Kenosha Eats: Trolley Dog

The Restaurant:

Trolley Dogs, 5501 6th Ave., is Downtown Kenosha’s family and budget friendly hot spot for handheld delights.

The Featured Dish:

Trolley Dog — An all-beef jumbo Vienna hot dog served in the same bun as a steamed tamale.

The Trolley Dog features a hot dog and tamale on the same bun.

Fun Fact: Since 2003, Trolley Dogs has proudly served Chicago-style hot dogs using nothing but officially approved hot dogs and toppings. This puts it in serious contention for the most authentic Chicago dogs in the county.

The Flavor and The Story:

While Kenosha is blessed with an incredible offering of creative and exciting sit-down eateries, sometimes you just need a great hot dog.

With menu items like the classic Chicago Dog and the kid-friendly Octo-Dog, Trolley Dogs has been the go-to location for a quick lunch and family-pleasing offerings for almost 20 years.

This no-frills sandwich shop is definitely best known for the classics, but in typical Kenosha style, they also make the menu their own with several unique topping combinations that have become their top sellers to repeat guests.

Deciding what to have for lunch on my recent visit was tough. Normally I’m a classic corn dog or Johnny Bravo Dog fan, but it seemed more appropriate to feature the restaurant’s namesake, the Trolley Dog.

This simple but unique creation still features a premium jumbo Vienna hot dog, but this frankfurter is a man about town, riding on a tamale trolley.

The fresh poppy seed bun is first stuffed with a steamed beef tamale, adding corn sweetness and a kick of Latin flavor to the sausage street food.

Like the rest of the menu, the Trolley Dog is also served with a generous helping of fresh, crispy fries and large styrofoam cup allowing you to choose or create your favorite fountain drink refreshment.

Sure, there are fancier lunch options, but on those days you’re feeling nostalgic for a classic, Trolley Dogs has you covered.

The Trolley Dog is available every day and priced at $7.98 including fries and a fountain drink.

Trolley Dogs is currently open for dine-in and also accepts carryout orders. You can view this dish and the entire menu at TrolleyDogs.com.

Trolley Dogs, which opened in 2003, is located at 5501 6th Ave.
