Ranger of the Week: Nic Davy

The Parkside men’s track & field team had one of its best meets in recent history at the Parkside Classic on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Rangers earned their first team win since 2018, defeating visiting Wisconsin Lutheran and Marquette. The Rangers dominated almost every event on the track, with one of their athletes finishing first in nearly every running event; highlighted by not one but three first-place finishes by this week’s Kenosha.com Ranger of the Week, Nic Davy.

Davy, a junior from Morris, Ill., had himself a day. He started off the meet with a win in the 55-meter dash, running a personal-best time of 6.55 seconds. Davy later returned in the 200-meter dash, where he ran another personal-best time of 22.39 seconds to win his second event of the day. He was not done there, however. Davy returned in the final race of the day, the men’s 4x400m relay, and helped claim Parkside’s third win of the year in the event.

It’s a family thing

Davy began running at Morris Community High School during his freshman year. He credits his sister, Maddie Davy, for getting him interested in the sport.

“Maddie always enjoyed competing in track & field and I kind of followed in her footsteps,” he sadi.

Maddie Davy competed as a distance runner for Parkside from 2016 to 2019, with her main event being the 800-meter run. The Davy siblings’ speed did not come as a surprise to the family, as their dad played cornerback for Winona State when he was in college.

“My dad is one of my biggest supporters,” Davy said. “I don’t think he’s ever missed a meet, no matter how far away it has been.”

Overcoming injury

Davy went almost a full year without racing. Between the cancelation of the 2020 outdoor track & field season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a foot injury, it was a lot of patiently waiting for Davy to get his chance to race. Davy broke his toe playing volleyball with his teammates on campus, and that left him sidelined for the entire 2021 indoor season. Coming back with low expectations, Davy had a great outdoor season and helped Parkside earn a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay at the 2021 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Big plans

Davy is currently studying criminal justice at Parkside. Following his time at Parkside, Davy plans to attend graduate school and become a defense attorney. He currently has no specific grad schools in mind, and focuses on getting faster on the track and helping his team achieve its goals.

Up next for the Rangers

Parkside track & field returns to action this Friday (Feb. 11) at the Grand Valley State Big Meet. This will be one of the largest meets the Rangers will travel to all season. The GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled to start on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Allendale, Mich.
