The Parkside track & field team had one of its best team performances at a track meet in program history at the Grand Valley State BIG Meet on Feb. 11-12. The team earned 44 personal records, three school records and, had five national-qualifying performances. One of those stellar performances came from senior Carolin Bothe, this week’s Kenosha.com Ranger of the Week.
Bothe (pronounced Bo-tay), had an incredible weekend. The senior from Germany broke the school record in the indoor 800-meter run with a provisional national qualifying time of 2:09.96. The previous record time of 2:10.20 was held by Jessica Lamp-Monson, who was a 14-time All-American at Parkside and competed at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2020. Bothe’s time ranks first in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and sixth in the nation. She is currently ahead of the reigning conference champion, and looks to win the conference championship next weekend. Her race also landed her this week’s GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week.
Bothe, who had a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall, transferred to Parkside after coming to America from her hometown of Stuhr, Germany. She is currently completing her master’s degree in business administration and plans to move to Milwaukee and find a job after she graduates. After spending some time in Milwaukee, Bothe hopes to move back to Germany to continue running and working in business.
Bothe started running 10 years ago. She credits her dad with getting her into the sport.
“He used to bring me to road races to watch,” Bothe said, “and eventually I started competing in kiddie races and I never looked back.”
Bothe looked at schools all across America when she decided to come over to finish school. She chose Parkside because of how genuine head coach Nick Maas was during recruiting. She felt wanted and her talents and interests felt appreciated within Maas’ program.
The Rangers are scheduled to split their roster this weekend as a handful of athletes will head to the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 19). The rest of the roster will travel to UW-Oshkosh for the Titan Challenge. This will be the final weekend of the regular season before the GLIAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-27.
