Kenosha Eats: Spicy Sweet Potato Wrap

The Restaurant:

The Daily Dose Café, 6010 40th Ave., is a neighborhood café that has been providing huge flavor in a tiny space since 2007. Don’t let the coffee shop atmosphere or small size fool you, though. The food coming out of this kitchen for breakfast and lunch is legendary.

The Featured Dish:

Spicy Sweet Potato Wrap — Sweet potato with spicy ancho seasoning, herb mix, spinach, onions, pumpkin seeds, chimichurri sauce and vegan aioli.

Fun Fact: The Daily Dose is moving to a new location at 4512 75th St. in late-summer/early-fall.

The Flavor and The Story:

While The Daily Dose might be most famous for the carnivore delight that is the “Awesome Beef!” their plant-based menu has quickly become my favorite part of their offerings.

When it comes to 100 percent plant-based options, most restaurants have a choice or two, or can modify regular menu items to accommodate.

The Daily Dose has taken a different, much appreciated approach by stepping up to the metaphorical plate and creating six creative and delicious items on the menu that are 100 percent vegan and 100 percent delicious.

Personally, I love vegan cooking. It’s a great opportunity to flex culinary skill and explore new flavors and textures.

The Spicy Sweet Potato Wrap is a spectacular example of just how exciting plant-based dishes can be.

First, this thing is massive. You will leave full, but somehow feeling great.

The wrap is stuffed to the brim with fresh roasted and diced sweet potato that has been seasoned with high flavor, but low heat ancho pepper for a sweet at savory protein base.

Honestly, I could probably eat an entire plate of the sweet potatoes as they are, but the creative crew at The Dose (as the regulars know it), lives up to their great reputation by pushing the flavors even further.

The house-made chimichurri, onions and spinach add depth and dimension to the bite by balancing out the sweetness of the potato and the roasted pepitas add a satisfying crunch to tie the whole dish together.

I know we live in a diverse town and there will be a few meat and potato folks who are skeptical of a plant-based menu, but I promise that if you try this wrap, you’re going to be pleasantly surprised by what can be accomplished with great ingredients and abundant creativity.

The Spicy Sweet Potato Wrap is available every day for $9.95.

The Daily Dose is currently open for dine-in and also accepts carryout orders. You can view this dish and the entire menu as well as order online at DailyDoseCafe.net.
