Food shopping has changed drastically over the years.
Supermarkets, as we now know them, didn’t exist in Kenosha until the mid-1950s. Before then, families walked down the street to a combination grocery store and meat market. Every neighborhood in town had several of these storefront operations to choose from.
By the late-1920s or early-1930s, there were over 140 neighborhood grocery stores in a city of 50,000 residents. In 2022, with a population of 100,000, Kenosha is down to six such neighborhood food stores. What follows is a geographical survey, by neighborhood, of those small businesses that are no longer with us.
Just to prove that the past is prologue, downtown Kenosha is getting a new meat market this summer. The Sherwood Game Farm in Caledonia plans to open the Sherwood Forest Meat Market at 5537 6th Avenue on or about July 1. The market is expected to carry beef, lamb, pork and poultry.
This building, at the northeast corner of 56th Street, once housed one of Kenosha’s icons, the old Mayer Drugs building. Kenosha saw its first supermarkets around 1954 when the National Food Store chain opened three new facilities, one downtown at 5333 Sheridan Road, one north side at 3726-3810 22nd Avenue and on the south side at 4018 75th Street.
