City of Kenosha Fall Fest

10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Saturday (Sept. 10)

Veterans Memorial Park, 6th Avenue and 52nd Street

10th annual festival features the Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers weigh-off, “Glass Slipper Princess” from the Fairytale Birthday company and also Miss Kenosha Jenna Zeihen will be available for photos with the giant pumpkins from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. People are welcome to stay to watch the pumpkin weigh-off and take photos while pumpkins are moved onto a scale from 1-2 p.m. Free mini pumpkins will be given to the first 100 children who stop by the Kenosha Public Market information booth, located on the west side of the parking lot outside City Hall. The band Thomas & Randle will perform from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Great Lakes Brew Fest

Great Lakes Brew Fest

3-6:30 p.m., Saturday (Sept. 10)

Celebration Place at Harbor Park, 5501 Ring Rd.

SE Wisconsin’s largest brewfest features unlimited sampling of more than 300 craft beers, homebrews, hard ciders & seltzers from nearly 75 brewers as well as live music, food trucks and vendors. The brewfest benefits the Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps, a non-profit charitable educational organization founded in 1934. Tickets are $20-80 plus fees. All attendees must be age 21 or older and present valid ID. No children, babies, or pets are allowed. Designated Driver tickets are available.

Kenosha Streetcar Day

Celebrate Kenosha’s Electric Streetcars with tours of the “streetcar barn,” LEGO display, and more. Ride the streetcars starting at 10:35 a.m. Fare for one loop is $1 for ages 13 and older, 50 cents for ages 5 to 12, ages 4 and younger ride free. An all-day pass costs $3.50 and can be purchased when boarding the streetcar. No charge for Streetcar Barn tour. Participating organizations include Kenosha Area Transit, Kenosha Streetcar Society, and Kenosha LEGO Users Group.

Walk in the Woods Art Fair at Hawthorn Hollow

Walk in the Woods 30th Annual Art Fair

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 10)

Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary & Arboretum, 880 Green Bay Rd.

More than 60 artists will be displaying their wares along the trails, including paintings, sculptures, garden art, pottery, furniture, artistic photography, and more. The event also includes kid’s activities led by the Kenosha Public Library, such as face painting and nature play and local musicians, including Mark Paffrath, Brent Mitchell, Matt Michael, and Rusty Horse throughout the day. A wide selection of food and beverages, including beer from Public Craft Brewing Co., will be available for purchase (no carry-ins). Cost is $10 per vehicle, cash only.

Natural History of the Chiwaukee Prairie at Kemper Center

Natural History of the Chiwaukee Prairie, 6:30-8 p.m., Kemper Center, 6501 3rd Ave. The Chiwaukee Prairie on the southern edge of Kenosha County is home to more than 450 species of plants, nearly 200 species of birds, and an immense variety of insects. Dr. Join Carthage College biology professor Dana Carrigan for a photographic tour of the prairie, arguably the single most important site to conserve in the entire ecological landscape of SE coastal Wisconsin. Presented by the Four Seasons Garden Club.Free and open to the public, no registration required. 

Curiosity Club Documentary Film Series: “The Biggest Little Farm,” 12:30-3 p.m. Southwest Library, 7979 38th Ave. John Chester chronicles the eight-year quest he and Molly Chester went on when they traded city living for 200 acres of barren farmland in the foothills of Ventura County and a dream to harvest in harmony with nature. 

Old Weird America: The Keepers of American Morals:The Destructive Campaigns of Anthony Comstock and Harry Anslinger, 6-7 p.m., Northside Library 1500 27th Ave. Historian Cathy Polovina takes a look at these two names which may not be familiar, but between them, America suffered under their regressive and punitive vice laws–particularly against birth control and marijuana– for over 100 years. Second Friday Lecture Series: The Band That Played for History. Ed Pierce presents the story of the little brass band from Brodhead, Wis. that played from 1857 to 1865. Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Oliver Otis Howard, Charles Hamilton, and Nathaniel P. Banks were among the impressive list of those who heard the music of the 1st Brigade band and its other combinations.

Lakeshore Fossil Hunting, 1-3 p.m., meet at Kenosha Public Museum, 5500 1st Ave. Hunt for fossils along the Lake Michigan shore and discover clues to Kenosha’s past.Participants must provide their own transportation to the collection site – approximately a half mile from the museum. Register online before the program date, or in-person the day of the program. Free for members, $10 for non-members.

Behind the Scenes Tour of the Simmons Library, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Simmons Library, 711 59th Pl. Enjoy a peek behind the scenes of our local historic treasure. Learn about Zalmon Simmons, Daniel H. Burnham, and the history of this beautiful building. This tour involves significant stair climbing. Due to the historic nature of the Simmons Library, the building is not equipped with a ramp for entrance. This event requires the use of a spiral staircase. Registration required.

Safety Day in the Prairie

Safety Day in the Prairie, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Pleasant Prairie Fire Department, 3801 Springbrook Rd. Pleasant Prairie Public safety agencies both Police and Fire along with Public Works share what they do and how they serve residents. Agencies from The Kenosha Sheriff’s dept., Wisconsin State Patrol, Kenosha County Health and Aurora & Froedtert South will participate. The Flight for Life Helicopter is scheduled to land at about 10:30 a.m.
