Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum is thrilled to announce the highly-anticipated opening of its 2.5 mile newest trail system and recently restored wetland. The grand opening ceremony on Saturday, July 15th from 10 am – 2 pm will commence with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially marking the unveiling of this extraordinary area. Guests are invited to celebrate this momentous occasion and partake in guided hikes led by our knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Gain insights into the local flora, fauna, and the rich history of Hawthorn Hollow as you hike the trails and connect with nature. During the event, Hawthorn Hollow’s Charles and Kathryn Heide Observatory will also be open, so make sure to stop by and take a gaze at southeastern Wisconsin’s largest public viewing telescope.
This exciting addition marks a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to cultivate appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of our natural and local heritage through environmental education and sanctuary preservation. Nestled in the heart of Somers, Hawthorn Hollow has long been a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts, families, schools, universities, and those seeking solace in the great outdoors.
One of the most notable features of this new area is a recently-restored wetland. Hawthorn Hollow’s Wetland Restoration for Ravine Protection project, completed in 2022, included the installation of a shallow basin that captures and stores storm water runoff. This new wetland provides wildlife habitat, improves the health of the Pike River and offers remarkable views for Hawthorn Hollow visitors
The highlight of this ongoing restoration area is the breathtaking boardwalk, which allows visitors to navigate along the restored wetland. Prepare to gain a unique perspective on the delicate ecosystem that thrives within. A must- see feature is the enchanting Chorus Pond. Listen to the symphony of the local wildlife, as frogs, birds, and insects harmoniously fill the air with their soothing melodies.
Coming soon, for those seeking an up-close encounter with the local wildlife, an observation blind will be built and positioned for optimal wildlife viewing. Watch in awe as birds take flight, mammals forage, and the beauty of nature unfolds before your eyes.
Hawthorn Hollow’s mission to preserve and showcase our natural heritage is made possible through the unwavering support of our dedicated volunteers and generous donors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have contributed their time, resources, and passion to make this new area a reality. As we continue our conservation efforts, we encourage the community to consider supporting Hawthorn Hollow by volunteering their time or making a donation to help sustain and enhance the sanctuary for future generations to enjoy.
