It is with great excitement that we welcome Dr. Abdul Sami Khan to the Gastroenterology team at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital. Dr. Khan brings a passionate focus on educating patients about the importance of colorectal cancer screening. Dr. Khan also brings expertise in pancreatic disease diagnosis and treatments. With his unique skills, local patients now have direct access to a leading-edge gastroenterology procedure. Let’s get to know Dr. Khan!
My wife’s family is from Kenosha, and I have lived in the area with my wife and three kids for a while now. We have a ten-year-old, seven-year-old, and a one-year-old. We love this community and enjoy fishing and family time. It is a priority for us to live in this area, and I am thrilled to be developing my practice at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital knowing the positive impact I can have on the community where I live.
I enjoy that being a gastroenterologist includes clinic time where I can build relationships with patients and that it is a procedure-based field where I can directly improve a patient’s quality of life. This combination of diagnosing and treating is important to me. It is fulfilling to become a patient’s established gastroenterologist that they can always rely on.
Colorectal cancer screening is recommended at age forty-five for both males and females. Guidelines have changed, but a colonoscopy is the gold standard for screening. This screening can be a life saver! If polyps are identified, removal of the polyps can improve not only your lifespan but the quality of your life. If no polyps are found, you may not need another screening for ten years.
If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, I recommend that you get screened even earlier than forty-five years of age. There are screening options, and procedures have improved over the years. The prep work for a colonoscopy is more palatable and simpler than before. It is an outpatient procedure that lasts approximately thirty minutes. Patients do receive an IV line and anesthesia. So, in a morning or afternoon session, you can be screened and have the peace of mind knowing what steps need to be taken next for your health.
I encourage everyone to have the colonoscopy discussion with your primary care provider. If you are forty-five years old and healthy with no medical conditions, we offer what is called an open access colonoscopy. You just need a referral from your primary care physician.
If you have any questions, we have three gastroenterologists and three nurse practitioners on our team at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital available to discuss options with you.
Besides routine endoscopies, I perform what is called an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure to diagnose and treat problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. It is a great benefit to local patients to have access to this procedure right here close to home and not have to travel to a major metropolitan area.
Being part of the Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital team means convenience and personalized care for my patients. With local surgeons, local primary care physicians, local physical therapists, and more, I can easily coordinate care with other specialties. It is all in the best interests of our patients. With Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital’s close-knit system, we personally know many of the other providers, and coordinating care for a patient is as simple as walking across the hall or making a phone call. Our system of care is accessible, and patients do not have to wait for months to book appointments or procedures with our GI Clinic. I am proud to be part of this world class healthcare team.
