How is Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital on the leading edge of ICU services?

The care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital is managed by a team of four intensivists. Intensivists are medical practitioners specialized in caring for severely injured or ill patients whose conditions are complex and can rapidly become unstable. Having an ICU managed by intensivists leads to prompter care, improved recovery outcomes, and reduced length of hospital stays. Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital is absolutely on the leading edge by providing this type of treatment that is typically only found in very large university hospital settings.

Why do pulmonology and critical care go hand in hand?

Although critical care is a comprehensive field of its own, pulmonary care comprises a key component of it. Patients in the ICU often have breathing impairments and need significant respiratory support. As an intensivist, a routine day in the ICU involves fine tuning and adjusting pulmonary support to facilitate a patient’s recovery. Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital has four intensivists including Dr. Davuluri, Dr. Patel, Dr. Griffiths, and me. All four of us are also pulmonologists.

What inspires you to work as a pulmonologist and intensivist?

I have always wanted to interact with people, and I enjoy the sciences. I began my advanced education with an engineering focus, but I found that it lacked the personal connections I was really wanting. I determined that studying medicine was a solution for me to combine my interests in science and interpersonal relationships. Helping people is fundamental to everything I do as a physician. After caring for a patient in the ICU, I continue to manage their lung disease in the clinic. I value being able to build long-term relationships with my patients as I see them all the way through their recovery.

How do your specialty skills help local patients?

Advancements in bronchoscopy have really expanded what a pulmonologist can offer patients. I can help patients in new and impactful ways. I can perform biopsies of previously inaccessible lung nodules as well as lymph nodes. This allows for early detection of cancers and helps to identify candidates for curative procedures.

These advancements, along with Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital’s oncology, radiation oncology, and thoracic surgery services, enable patients to receive comprehensive care for their lung cancer without leaving Southeastern Wisconsin. Being from this area, it is important to me to offer these services to my community and to help make receiving specialized care accessible and convenient.

What does being part of the Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital team mean to you?

It is an honor for me to be part of the world-class team at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital. The interventions we provide in the ICU are crucial, and the extensive, multidisciplinary team here gives an all-hands-on deck approach. This is how the best care is delivered to patients. It is both professionally satisfying and personally rewarding to be part of this team.

Additionally, being a member of this community myself, it is an honor to practice here. It means a lot to me to help patients and families that I see at local stores and events. Helping people is the heart of what I do, and I am grateful to be making a positive impact with the people of this wonderful community.
