This week’s highlights run the gamut from the all-things-Kenosha Home & Health Expo, to a showcase of hard work and resilience at KUSD Orchestra Fest to “the least athletic” sporting event ever. That’s quite a lineup!
Best Bet
Billed as the “least athletic, most fun event ever,” the Leprechaun and Lederhosen 0.1K Beer Run and after party is back at the Petrifying Springs Biergarten, 5555 7th St. on Saturday (March 12) from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
The St. Patrick’s Day edition of the beer “run” is hosted by The Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha and the Pets Biergarten, and presented by Heating & Cooling Solutions and CJW Inc.
“The response to the event has been great,” said Biergarten co-owner Michael Grab. “I think this time of year everyone is looking for an opportunity to get out of the house. We just happen to have an amazing opportunity and event with our .1K Leprechaun and Lederhosen run.
“This time of year gives us all a little hope that spring is somewhere just around the corner! Just today I was setting up at the Biergarten and was reminded of what it means to so many others. I must have been stopped about 10 times by regulars passing by and telling me how excited they are for us to open for the season and so are we!”
The event kicks off at 9 a.m. when the Biergarten opens for registration and the VIP Breakfast and CJ Double DJs start their full day of entertainment before passing the baton to the live bands later.
The race “stumbles off” at 10 a.m. A heated tent courtesy of Heating & Cooling Solutions LLC as well as beverages and food trucks will be available throughout the day. Offerings include a bratwurst reuben.
The Cashel Academy of Irish Dance will perform at noon, a live bagpiper will also be on hand. Live music starts at 6 p.m. with the Big Style Brass Band.
Yes, whatever the weather brings, the show will go on. A large heated tent will be set up for the after party.
For those who can’t wait to get started, the Biergarten will be open Friday night (March 11) from 4-11 p.m.
Run registration and more information are available online. Tickets are not required for the Biergarten, only the run and VIP breakfast.
The event is a nice segue into the season, right around the corner.
“Things to look forward to this season include Growlers To-Go of our delicious beer, some great new music acts and a new event that is sure to be a hit,” Grab said.

Kenosha Unified School’s Orchestra Fest, set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday (March 12) is once again a sell-out, with good reason. Not only does the event showcase the gifts of the district’s talented students and staff, it also brings a guest conductor with an amazing story to Kenosha. Remote viewing tickets are available for $5.
This year’s guest conductor is Soon Hee Newbold, a native of Seoul, Korea, and adopted as an infant and brought to the US. By the time she was 5 years old, Newbold played piano and soon picked up the violin. She went on to a brilliant career as a soloist and in professional orchestras throughout the world.
Newbold’s story includes her vast array of talents even outside the performance field. Once an intern in AIDS and Cancer research at the National Institute of Health in Ft. Detrick, Md., Newbold has worked for Walt Disney World as a contractor, stage manager, and professional musician She also produced albums and wrote for many recording projects and ensembles.
Recently, Newbold wrote the song “Endless Dreams” dedicated to those affected by Huntington’s disease, after her mother was stricken by the terminal disease.
Newbold currently works in Southern California with her husband. She is involved in many film, television, and commercial projects as a producer, actress, composer, and musician. As an actress, Soon Hee expanded her experiences to film and television. She got her first break in the film, “The Waterboy,” starring Adam Sandler, and first television role in the family comedy, “Camp Tanglefoot.”

It’s a music-rich weekend for symphony fans as the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra returns with “Jazzy American Moods” 7:30 p.m. Saturday (March 12) at Reuther Central High School’s Ralph J. Houghton Performance Center, 913 57th St. Featured artist is Canadian pianist Winston Choi, head of the piano program at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts and a prolific recording artist. He is known for his vibrant and interactive performance style.
Tickets are $30 for the general public, free for 17-an-under. College students with ID are also admitted free.

The 2022 Kenosha Expo Health & Home Show, a family-friendly & informative opportunity to meet Kenosha area businesses and organization, is set for 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday (March 12-13) at UW-Parkside’s Frank J. Petretti Fieldhouse, 4000 Petrifying Springs Rd.
From local businesses, Miss Kenosha Jenna Zeihen, food vendors including DeRango’s Pizza and Nothing Bundt Cakes, the Expo truly has something for everyone.
The Expo’s demonstration area will feature Kenosha Police Department K9 Unit, Kenosha Academy of Performing Arts, Kenosha YMCA and EMs Dance Center with more to be announced. The popular K9 Riggs will appear 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Kenosha Community Health Fair, presented by Aurora Medical Center, includes interactive services and health screenings free to Expo visitors, including free screenings for depression, anxiety, ADHD, and child-related disorders, trigger point findings and physical, occupational, and speech therapy screenings for children.

In honor of International Women’s Day, Blue House Books will be featuring four accomplished local female authors 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (March 12) at the indie book store, 5915 6th Ave. A.
Visitors to the shop can meet the authors, hear about their journey in writing, and have the opportunity to purchase their books and have them signed.
11 a.m.: Maggie Smith, a Milwaukee-based author, has her debut novel, “Truth and Other Lies,” which was just released Tuesday.
Noon: Meg Bonney, a Kenosha native and author of the young adult fantasy series “Everly.” The first two books in the trilogy, “Everly” and “Rosewood Burning” are available now and the final installment will be released later this year.
1 p.m.: Greta Kelly, the local author of “The Frozen Crown”, and its recently released sequel, “The Seventh Queen.”
2 p.m.: Hannah Morrissey, a Racine-based author, who released her debut novel “Hello, Transcriber” just last year, with her second novel in the series, “The Widowmaker,” set to release later this year.
Day Tripper
After a two-year hiatus, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, returns to Downtown Milwaukee Saturday (March 12), beginning at noon. The parade steps off on W. Wisconsin Avenue at N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (formerly Old World Third Street), and ends at Water Street and Highland Avenue.
The 54th St. Patrick’s Day Parade is sponsored by the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin.
“We are thrilled to bring the St. Patrick’s Day Parade back to downtown’s streets and celebrate our city’s rich Irish heritage,” said parade director Mike Boyle. “After a few years away, we are planning a very special event and know families will be delighted to see the return of one of Milwaukee’s favorite traditions.”

KPL’s Uptown Neighborhood Library, Kenosha Literacy Council, & PlaySpace Kenosha announced that they are teaming up to create the Inaugural Family Fun Fest, set for Saturday, April 2 from 1-4 p.m. Come try out archery and jousting skills, dine in the mess hall, and get knighted by the Queen. More details will be available in coming weeks.
Tickets are now on sale for An Evening with Jeffrey Foucault, set for 7:30 p.m. April 6 at the Rhode Center for the Arts. Singer/songwriter Foucault is a Wisconsin native who brings his nationwide tour to the Midwest in honor of his roots. He’ll be performing his American folk/roots rock/country music with a full band and Minnesota songsmith Erik Koskinen will open the show. Tickets are $20-25 or $120 for 4 seats at a front-row table with bar service.
