Gateway Technical College seeking nominations for 2023 Dr. King Humanitarian Award

Honorees will be recognized for exemplifying the principles of Dr. King and serving the causes of equality, justice, freedom and peace

By GATEWAY TECHNICAL COLLEGE

Gateway Technical College began in 1911 as America’s first publicly funded technical college, preparing students to achieve their academic and professional goals. Our hands-on training in over 70 programs of study prepares 21,000 students annually to enter new careers or advance their current ones. We value and serve students and communities in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties through a nationally recognized approach to career and technical education.

Gateway Technical College is taking nominations for its 2023 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, an annual college effort to honor those individuals and groups who work to support the community and exemplify Dr. King’s values.

The deadline for submitting nominations is Dec. 9. The form can be found at: gtc.edu/humanitarian-award.

Honorees will be recognized for exemplifying the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and serving the causes of equality, justice, freedom and peace at Gateway Technical College’s 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration program noon Jan. 16, 2023.

Individuals may nominate a living resident or organization of Kenosha County, Racine County or Walworth County who instills pride within the community and inspires others.

Gregory Bennett Jr. and Seeds of Hope were honored with the 2021 Humanitarian Awards.

The award may go to students, adults and organizations distinguished for humanitarian contributions to society in their school, business or profession, as well as dedication to volunteerism or philanthropic life’s work. The 2022 honorees were Corey Prince and Open Wings Learning Community.

Gregory Bennett Jr. and Seeds of Hope were honored with the 2021 Humanitarian Awards.

Bennett is the founder and director of Peace in the Streets, an organization committed to empowering Kenosha’s youth.

Seeds of Hope, founded by Jamie Stilling-Stepp, is an Elkhorn-based nonprofit providing a positive and structured program to meet the needs of developmentally disabled youth and adults. The group uses horticulture and recreation to plant seeds of possibilities in everyone.
