Melvin Carlton Smith, a 92-year-old resident of Kenosha, Wisconsin, peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Hospice Alliance Hospice House in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.
Born in Jasper, Alabama, to the late Luther Curtis and Lizzie (Panter) Smith, Melvin attended high school before proudly serving in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in April 1955. Subsequently, he owned and operated his own general contracting business, S & D Builders, out of Long Grove, Illinois.
On June 25, 1955, Melvin married Mary Joyce Laxson in Chicago. She preceded him in death on July 29, 1998.
Melvin had numerous interests, including traveling to Canada for fishing trips, renting a lodge, and hiring an Indian guide to assist with fishing. He also enjoyed working with his hands and building structures. Work was his passion, and he spent countless hours constructing his business and creating a company that employed carpenters to build custom-built homes and beautiful neighborhoods. Melvin took great pride in his work and cared for many people, including his brother Curtis and his sister Sarah. Melvin also enjoyed cooking and gardening, and he would often can food from his garden for the winter months.
Melvin is survived by his children, Melvin Smith Jr., David (Regina) Smith, and Kathy (Aaron) Smith. He is also survived by his grandchildren, DJ Smith, Steven Smith, Brandon Brezezowski, and Nikki Brezezowski. In addition to his parents and wife, Melvin was preceded in death by his long-term girlfriend, Goldie McGee.
