It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Susan M. (Ecklund) Obregon, affectionately known as “Granny” and “Wally” who departed this life on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the age of 69.
Born on December 4, 1954, in Palatine, Illinois, Susan was the cherished daughter of the late Herman Ecklund and Dorothy (Bartsch) Dankert. In the summer of 1973, she married Raul Obregon, in St Peter United Church of Christ. Raul stated, “Susan was the best partner and she blessed him with a lifetime of memories.” They were delighted with 51 years of marriage and six children.
Susan’s passion for animals and her nurturing spirit led her to impactful roles, including working for the Humane Society, grooming horses at Arlington Park Racecourse, and managing Briarwood Horse Farm. A devoted horsewoman, Susan was an accomplished member of the Sheriff’s Posse and proudly displayed her many ribbons from horse shows.
Susan’s life revolved around her family and the love she poured into each of them. She is survived by her beloved husband, Raul, and her cherished children: Anthony Obregon, Melissa Obregon, Jessica Garcia, Raquel Willis, Ascension Obregon, and Andrew Obregon. She was the proud grandmother of 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, who were blessed to know her boundless love and wisdom.
She will also be deeply missed by her siblings: Kathy Ladore, Wayne Ecklund, and Keith Ecklund, and countless extended family members and friends. Susan was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Denise and Tracy Ecklund; her niece, Shannon Ecklund; her step-father, Richard Dankert; and her brother-in-law, Luigi Ladore.
Susan’s love extended beyond her family to the animals she cared for throughout her life. Her kindness, compassion, and nurturing spirit left an indelible mark on everyone she met. As the foundation of her family, she was a source of strength and love, and her legacy will continue to resonate through the lives of those she touched.
Susan Obregon will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
There will be no formal funeral service however if you would like to pay your respects, the family will be hosting a Celebration of Life in Susan’s honor. The celebration will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 12:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Raquel’s home. If you need the address or directions, please call Proko Funeral Home.
