Mary Margaret Myers (98) died peacefully on February 6, 2025 at Library Terrace Assisted Living in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Mary Jane Istvanek was born on September 6, 1926 on the family farm on highway C in Pleasant Prairie, WI with the help of the neighbor down the road. The doctor never made it to the farm to check out Mom and baby till the next day, so her birth was officially recorded with Kenosha County as September 7, 1926.
Mary spent her younger days going to school, doing chores, and playing baseball with her ten siblings. Once a week they rode into Kenosha, WI on a milk wagon to attend religious classes at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. There was a Nun named Mary Margaret at the church and the kids started teasing and calling her Mary Margaret. She never knew her name was really Mary Jane until she saw her birth certificate in 2019 for the first time.
When she was a teenager, the construction of Highway 41 (now Interstate 94) cut their farm in half so the family sold and moved to Kenosha, WI. That’s where she met the “love of her life”, James Myers. They were married on July 2, 1948. Over the 70+ years together, they lived in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Howell, Michigan, and for over forty years in Marble Falls, Texas.
Mary is survived by one sister, Patricia Cairo and two brothers, Francis Istvanek and James Istvanek all of Kenosha, Wisconsin and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Steven Istvanek, her husband James “Red” Myers, four sisters, Ann Benoit, Elizabeth Packman, Ida Davis and Rose Cherny; and three brothers, Steven Istvanek, Albert Istvanek and Edward Istvanek all of Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan at a date to be determined.
The family would like to thank the staff at Library Terrace Assisted Living and Hospice Alliance for all of their wonderful care and support.
